The New Sarawak Tribune (16.06.2011)

It’s Miri vs Kuching

MIRI: In-form bowlers Chong Jun Foo and Miri-born Aris Ardila Santosoh are expected to hog the limelight in the Sarawak Closed Bowling Championships which begins at the Megalanes East bowling centre, here, tomorrow.

Jung Foo, who arrived here yesterday afternoon, was his usual modest self when asked about his chances of defending the Men’s Open and Boys (Youth) Open titles he won in Kuching last year.

“I am in good form but I still have to qualify for the event. No, my average has not touched more than 210 or 212.

“I want to do well and it’s not impossible for me to win again, here in Miri.Still, I have to look for Aris,” said Jun Foo.

Jun Foo was in superb form when he competed in the 34th Canon National Open in Sunway Pyramid two weeks ago.

There Jun Foo made the Men’s Open final, only to miss out on the step-ladder.

Jun Foo attributed the setback to nerves because it was his first time playing a tournament that was being telecast on TV.

“It was my first time playing in a tournament being telecast live (by Astro Arena) and I was a bit nervous,” said Jun Foo.

Still the Kuching-born made up for the near-miss by finishing second in the Youth event in the Singapore Open a few days later.

And the bowler who finished first in that event was fellow youth international Aris.

Besides Jun Foo, Nurafidza Mohd Amran will also defend the women’s senior title in the Sarawak Closed.

They are among the more than 200 local and foreign bowlers expected in State Meet, organised together with the Sarawak leg of the Sportsexcel MTBC-NSC Junior Bowling Circuit and the Megalanes East International Invitational.

The categories in the Sarawak leg of the Sportsexcel MTBC-NSC Junior Bowling Circuit are Boys Graded and Open, Girls Graded and Open, Boys U-12 and Girls U-12 while the President Cup will be organised for the Boys and Girls U-15.

National elite women keglers Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore and Dayang Khairunisa Dhiyana Abang Jamalidon have been released from national training and will vie for top honours and a share of the more than RM13,000 in prize money with bowlers from Sarawak, Labuan, Sabah and Brunei.
