Jun Foo wins as Kuching rule again

MIRI: In-form bowler Chong Jun Foo defended his Youth and Men’s Open titles at the Megalanes East alley as Kuching again ruled the roost at the Sarawak Closed Bowling Championships yesterday.

Elite national bowler Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore won the Women’s Open as bowlers from Kuching, like in last year’s competition, dominated both the Men’s and Women’s Open finals.

National youth bowler Jun Foo, who showed good from the recent Malaysian National Open and the Singapore Open, beat fellow Kuchingite Jonathan Ding Sagan in the Men’s Open final while Jacqueline, who together with elite national bowler Dayang Khairunizza Dhiyana Abang Jamilon had taken a break from national training, beat last year’s champion Nurafidza Mohd Amran in the final.

Jacquel ine, who is rejoining national training at Sunway Megalanes at 6pm today, said she had expected to win the title.

“I am in good form and I hope to maintain it.I will roll off with the national team tomorrow,” said Jacqueline. She, together with Dayang, are fighting for places in the national team to compete in the Italy’s San Marino and Catalina Open and Indonesian Open next month.

Jun Foo, meanwhile, said he owed his victory to good coaching, encouragement from his parents and friends and the support from the Amateur Bowling Association of Sarawak.

Both Jun Foo and Jacqueline received their trophies and champions’ cash prize of RM500 each from Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai.Jonathan and Nurafidza each won RM300.

Kuching lasses grab Under-15 top three spots

MIRI: The Sarawak Closed Tenpin Bowling Association Under-15 Ladies categories on Wednesday saw three young lasses from Kuching grabbing the top three spots in the warm-up phase of the competition.

The champion, 13-year old Ellysha Syafeena Roshaili, who originally hailed from Kuching but who is now studying at SMK Methodist in Sibu, said she was surprised that she managed to score 751 and emerge as the champion.

“I am really surprised with my own performance but at the same instance, I am also very happy that I won the first place” said Ellysha.

Ellysha said that when she was in Primary 4, she developed the interest in bowling when she saw the national bowler Shalin Zulkifli playing on the television.

“Shortly after that, I sought my father’s permission to take up bowling and ever since I never regretted my decision” added Ellysha.

Ellysha added that she was nervous in the initial first two games but managed to calm her nerves and gradually got into the game.

Ellysha’s most recent competition was her participation in the MSSM which was held in Melaka last April and she managed to place herself in the top 20 for both the Under-15 singles and the doubles categories.

First runner-up 13-year old Raylin Ang Ke Xin who is a student SMK Batu Lintang said she took up the sport because she was influenced by her father who is himself an avid bowler when she was at a tender age of eight.

Raylin’s last competition was in last year’s Sabah League in July.

“I emerged as the champion in the Under-12 category in the Sabah League and this is my first time bowling in Miri’s Megalanes East” said Raylin.

Raylin scored a total of 673 pins to win the second place.

Third place 15-year old Nerosha Keligit, who is a student of SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor, said she was a little disappointed with her performance on Tuesday’s competition because she said she could have done better.“This is also my first time bowling at Miri and we just arrived in Miri by bus this morning prior to the game in the evening” “We started our trip by bus on Monday evening at around 7pm and only reached Miri at 9am, today” added Nerosha.

Nerosha deduced that her performance might be effected due to her lack of rest as she was not able to rest well during the 14-hour trip.

Chatty Nerosha said that the last competition she participated in was the 2010 Sarawak League where she was the champion under the category that she competed.Nerosha said her mother, who is a bowler herself, is her main source of influence and fired up her interest in bowling ever since she was in Primary 3.

All three girls will compete again in the Sports Excel Sarawak Leg Junior Circuit this weekend at the Bintang Plaza’s Megalanes East.So don’t miss the opportunity to catch them in action there.

It’s Miri vs Kuching

MIRI: In-form bowlers Chong Jun Foo and Miri-born Aris Ardila Santosoh are expected to hog the limelight in the Sarawak Closed Bowling Championships which begins at the Megalanes East bowling centre, here, tomorrow.

Jung Foo, who arrived here yesterday afternoon, was his usual modest self when asked about his chances of defending the Men’s Open and Boys (Youth) Open titles he won in Kuching last year.

“I am in good form but I still have to qualify for the event. No, my average has not touched more than 210 or 212.

“I want to do well and it’s not impossible for me to win again, here in Miri.Still, I have to look for Aris,” said Jun Foo.

Jun Foo was in superb form when he competed in the 34th Canon National Open in Sunway Pyramid two weeks ago.

There Jun Foo made the Men’s Open final, only to miss out on the step-ladder.

Jun Foo attributed the setback to nerves because it was his first time playing a tournament that was being telecast on TV.

“It was my first time playing in a tournament being telecast live (by Astro Arena) and I was a bit nervous,” said Jun Foo.

Still the Kuching-born made up for the near-miss by finishing second in the Youth event in the Singapore Open a few days later.

And the bowler who finished first in that event was fellow youth international Aris.

Besides Jun Foo, Nurafidza Mohd Amran will also defend the women’s senior title in the Sarawak Closed.

They are among the more than 200 local and foreign bowlers expected in State Meet, organised together with the Sarawak leg of the Sportsexcel MTBC-NSC Junior Bowling Circuit and the Megalanes East International Invitational.

The categories in the Sarawak leg of the Sportsexcel MTBC-NSC Junior Bowling Circuit are Boys Graded and Open, Girls Graded and Open, Boys U-12 and Girls U-12 while the President Cup will be organised for the Boys and Girls U-15.

National elite women keglers Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore and Dayang Khairunisa Dhiyana Abang Jamalidon have been released from national training and will vie for top honours and a share of the more than RM13,000 in prize money with bowlers from Sarawak, Labuan, Sabah and Brunei.

44th Singapore International Open 2011

DOUBLE JOY BY MALAYSIAN YOUTH
Thursday, 02 June 2011

It's a double joy for our young Malaysians !

After capturing the Youth Open titles at Malaysian International Open Championships 2011 at Sunway Mega Lanes last week, our young Malaysians continued the momentum to stamp their supremacy in wresting another identical victory in the Youth divisions.

Our Malaysian youths completed a clean sweep of the Youth Open Masters titles of the 44th Singapore International Open with Aris Ardilla and Chong Jun Foo finishing one-two in the boy's division; while Syaidatul Afifah, Faten Najihah, Fatin Azmira and Steffira Zeandea rocket up the top four podium finish in the girl's division.

YO_champs_big
2010 Asian Youth gold medalist, Aris Ardilla set a cracking pace to take an early lead with his sizzling opening game of 253 but soon found himself trailing Aussie Sam Cooley after the second game.· Singapore's Jovi Ang made his bid by taking over the running after the third game but could not keep up the pace set by Aris after the Malaysian regained the lead at the halfway mark. Despite losing the lead briefly to team-mate, Chong Jun Foo after the fifth game, a re-vitalized Aris went on to end the 8-game finals with 1709 to capture the title.

Chong made a late charge in his final game but finished 19 pins behind the champion with 1690 while Cooley took third spot with 1671, a further 19 pins away. Singapore's Jonathan Ang stormed home to snatch fourth spot with 1609 to edge early pace-setter, Jovi into fifth position with 1597. Other Malaysian youths, Johnathan Chan (8th), Khoo Beng Khai (10th), Ahmad Muaz (13th), Muhd Syafiq Sajeli (14th) and Syimir Abd Razak (15th).

YGO_top3_winners The Malaysian girls were much more superior than their boys counterpart sweeping the finals with the top four places. Syaidatul Afifah took a convincing victory to win her second international youth title after her triumph in Taiwan and Penang last year.

Syaidatul, who took over the lead after the third game, amassed a total of 1604, 49 pins ahead of Faten Najihah in second with 1555. Early pace-setter and pint-sized, Fatin Azmira settled for third with 1545 while Steffira Zeandea completed the top 4 for Malaysia with 1513.

Singapore's best finisher was Girl's Under-18 first runner-up, Tracy See in fifth position with 1485. Tengku Emanina Laily (6th), Puteri Nadia (8th), Natasha Roslan (9th) and Radin Nur Najwa (12th) were the other Malaysian finalists.

Aris Ardilla won S$1,000 for his effort, Chong and Cooley taking home S$600 and S$400 while Syaidatul, Faten, Fatin and Steffira all won S$800, S$600, S$300 and S$200 respectively.
